     Tips on Winterizing Your Home:

  • Keep heating systems safe and efficient by having them professionally cleaned and maintained. Periodic maintenance such as cleaning & replacing filters can save up to 10% of heating costs.
  •  When washing clothes, use cold water and wash only full loads. Turn the water heater down to 120º F. Wrapping the tank with insulation can save as much as $20 a year or more, depending on the fuel.
  •  Install low-flow restrictors on showerheads and faucets. Take short showers instead of baths.
  •  Clean refrigerator coils and check settings for temperatures between 37º and 41º F. Keep freezers full and set temperature at 0º to 5º F. Check door gaskets for a tightness.
  • Avoid heavy use of kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during winter but watch for damaging moisture buildup on windows and walls.
  •  Make a habit of turning off unused lighting and appliances (TVs, computers). For high use areas, replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps. Although they are expensive, they are much more energy efficient and last 6 to 10 times as long. This won't cut heating costs but it will reduce the electricity bill.
  •  Warm air leaking out of the home in the winter and into the home in the summer wastes a large portion (10%) of energy dollars. Caulk, seal and weather-strip all seams, cracks, and openings to the outside, including heating ducts in unheated spaces and attic openings. Use a heavy plastic wrap to cover window air conditioning units and attic fans.
  • Insulate the home wherever possible.
  • At night or when leaving home for four hours or more, turn the thermostat down 10º F from its normal setting (don't reduce settings if there is a heat pump). For every degree the thermostat is lowered, there is a potential savings of between 1% and 3% off the heating bill.
